Color, Color and More Color!

When I was taking a look at designing my new collection, I reviewed and research color trends for future seasons and how I am going in incorporate color into my designs.

Think of different shades and tones of blues (hint on my new collection color palette:)) made me think about what I learned in my fashion studies.. the meaning of colors and how to use them. I then began to think about complementary colors and how I was going to make a cohesive collection to showcase at Sask Fashion Week

For all you future designers, here is some color tips and meanings to refresh your brain:

Color Wheel
Yellow:  The color of energy, light and joy. It brings about feelings of happinesss, warmth and cheer.  This color is often showcased in the warmer seasons of spring and summer.

Orange: A mix between red and yellow, combines the energy between the two. It is associated with warmer season and feelings such as enthusiasm and attraction. This color is of high viability and can make a design stand out!

Red: The color of alertness, danger and divination. It's a color of controversy in the early 1900s and was band to be warn in public. Now-a-days, it's widely used to catch peoples attention. It's related to love, sex, passion and feelings of lust.

Purple: I mix between red and blue, this color is associated with luxury, royalty and power.  It is a color of young and often used in children's and women's clothing.

Blue: Brings a sense of calm, relaxation, zen, but is also associated with sadness and depression. Blue is a very masculine color and is related to depth, stability and power. It is a color often used in colder season depending on the tones and/or shades used.

Green: The color of Earth and nature. It brings about feelings of happiness, harmony, freshness, cleanness and fertility. It's also associated with greed, power and money. It can indicate the feeling of safety and protection. This is a color widely used in all season, but mostly brighter greens in warmer months and darker greens in colder months.

Tones and Shades of Color

All colors can be used during any season, but can vary depending on what shades or tones are used.  For example, muted colors are used in colder seasons and brighter colors are used in warmer seasons. This is not always the case, but just depends on the trends! Just keep on a look out for what is going to be 'in' and 'trending'.

To learn more about the psychology of colors and how to use them in design, here is a great articles from the school I attended: Art Institute of Vancouver - Color Theory Influences Design

Enjoy!
